Clinical Observations on Complications in 1,000 Cases with Diabetes Mellitus



Abstract
A clinical observation of diabetic complications was made on 1,000 cases with diabetes mellitus at the diabetic clinic of Kyungpook National University Ilospital and following results were obtaineda
The male to female ratio of the patients was 2.02 to 1 ,and over 80 per cent of them were beyond the age of 40 years. -
These cases were divided into 6 groups according to the duration of illness; 316 cases with duration of illness below one year, 276 cases discovered o~n routine examination at our clinic, 192 casts with one to two years, 104 cases with three to four years, 70 cases with five to ten years and 42 cases with over ten years.
Four frequent complications were neuropathy, infection including tuberculosis, hypertension and retinopathy. Thirteen patients had arteriosclerotic heart disease and six patients had diabetic coma which was quite rare as compared with that in western countries.
The most frequent symptom in neuropathy was pain of the extremities. The impotence was found in thirty five out of 376 male patients whose age was below fifty years.
Infections were tuberculosis, urinary tract infection, pneumonina, shin infection and others in the order of decreasing frequency.
Among 165 pulmonary tuberculosis cases, 56.4 per cent had moderate to far advafced stage and 50.8 per cent had cavity and in the 5th decade the incidence vas highest.
The incidence of complications had a tendency to increase as the duration of illness became longer.
